Working Class Magic

June 29, 2011

Have you ever seen so much JDS jewelry in an editorial!? Very excited to announce Working Class Magazine’s Summer issue, which chose lil me for its cover story, has launched! It’s such a huge honor to be a part of this magazine and to be the cover feature of The Om Issue is beyond words. A massive thanks to Marcel Dagenais, editor in chief, for asking me to come along on this rad project. I had the pleasure of styling this shoot with Marcel, while Susie Sobol rocked the makeup for our model Yael Greenberg, with this incredible set design created by the ladies of Domestic Construction. These gorgeous photos were shot by the super talented, Tracy Morford. This woman knows how to take a photograph. The story itself was written by my friend Danielle Sipple, whose words flow from her with such beauty, it’s astounding. She flew all the way from Vancouver BC to spend a week with me in NYC to write this story. We wandered through the streets of the fashion district together, soaking in the beauty of my muse, Gotham City, both us of reveling in her majesty. You can read her piece about me and Jené DeSpain Jewelry on the Working Class Magazine website, and scope the entire issue online. – I can’t recommend it enough.

this spring has been a busy one for popular urban street artists here in nyc. shepard fairey had his big opening at Deitch Project on May Day (a party that i stood in the longest line for any event i have ever attended), while Banksy has been famously popping up all over San Francisco and recently left a few of his gems here in Soho, Chinatown, and Brooklyn, and of course, there’s swoon. here are a few of their recent pieces that i have the grand pleasure of walking past in my regular nyc travels…

horse feathers slay me

May 5, 2010

this year i received the best birthday gift ever (other than diamonds that is) – tickets to a Horse Feathers concert. a few years ago cristin stumbled upon the music of this incredible band, and we have been eternally bewitched by them since. the sweet, soft melodies, poetic genius, and unmistakable crooning of Justin Ringle will stir desire for more under every inch of your skin. we went to see them at Union Hall in brooklyn on monday night. the intimate, old timely mood of this venue is the perfect setting to enjoy each strum of banjo and each pluck of violin strings contributing to make Horse Feathers sound so mesmerizing.

if you have not discovered her amazing music yet, holly miranda is going to bring a whole new level of bliss to your auditory experience. her great voice and ethereal songs will send you to an otherworld of daydreaming about the one who broke your heart and the one who will come along to mend it. a fellow brooklyn girl, holly is about to take the globe by storm with her upcoming international tour and bewitch every lucky boy n girl along the way. today she came over to my apartment to talk about nyc, her adorable nieces, and jewelry. i am creating an exclusive collection of jewelry just for holly. yes, she’s that special. seriously. we sipped chai and dished over some of my favorite topics- gemstones and horses. i’m not going to spill too much now, but i think this is going to be a super rad collaboration. no details about what bling i am adorning holly with yet, but here’s a sneak peek at my sketch pad as we brainstormed ideas…

stay tuned. jené despain jewelry for holly miranda will be appearing in NYC soon…

in the meantime, here is some brooklyn up in here:

Paris is Red. Chrysanthemums are Charming.

May 3, 2010

pink is a color that stirs a slight reservation in me. perhaps a childhood of pink explosion has led to an adulthood of pink moderation. occasionally,  i do have my moments of pink joy. my bike is a beloved friend of mine. she is fast. she is daring. she knows the streets of nyc well  and guides me through their chaotic maze with comfortable ease. i never leave her outside overnight and when i do have to lock her up, i give a reassuring squeeze to her handlebars and tell her not to let anyone fuck with her, promising i will be right back. when we’re not out tackling the traffic and potholes, she hangs out in my kitchen.

this morning at the market, i was choosing new flowers for my house and spotted some adorable, tiny, pink mums. i love chrysanthemums. the repetition of their petals is so alluring to me. they’re sexy, those petals. anyway, i saw the pink mums and thought of my bike. so i decided to bring her home a bouquet. after all, my bike totally deserves to be courted and flowers to prove my adoration seemed like the perfect expression of smitten pink joy.
